Low Light Houseplants

At Meeting Green, we're all plant lovers and want to see our customer's plants live their best life, so it's time to get real about lowlight houseplants! When customers come in and ask, "what plant will be happy in my bathroom with no window?" we have to be honest - no plant will be happy with no light. Light is their food source! Plants need light to survive so putting your new plant in a room with no window and no grow lights is a death sentence. However, there are many plants that will tolerant low light conditions!

Some houseplants are better equipped to survive in areas with low light. Remember, low light never means no light, but if you have a window that is north facing, or shaded by a tree, or your plant will be positioned far away from the light source... you probably have low light!

These are our go-to plants for those darker areas of your home:

-The Zamioculcas zamiifolia (ZZ plant) thrives on neglect and we love the moody dark purple of the Raven ZZ!

-The Sanseveria, but recently reclassified as Dracaena (Snake plant) is a classic pick for low light and needs very little water. With so many different varieties, like the fernwood or moonshine, anyone can find a new favorite!

-Some Philodendron varieties like the Philodendron brasil are very tolerant of lower light! If yours looks "leggy" it may be in too dark of a spot.

-Finally, consider a Peace Lily if you're looking for a leafy statement in the darker spot of your house.

If you're adding one of these low light plants to your space, make sure to avoid root rot by watering them less often. The sun dries your plants so, if you have a plant far away from the sun, it will dry out slower. Your lowlight plants should be drying out before getting any more water so they don't sit in soggy soil!
